The Weber Art Gallery at the University of Pikeville in Kentucky recently featured an exhibition by artist Charles Parker Boggs entitled “The Only Way Out is Art”. The video interview above captures Boggs discussing his work and the exhibition.
Boggs’ work is heavily influenced by his surroundings and the people he meets in his life. Many of his works are based on conversations he has with people, or on overheard snippets of conversation. He states that “the art comes out of a need to communicate with other people.” In the video interview, Boggs discusses how he creates art as a way to process the world around him and to connect with others.
The exhibition at the Weber Art Gallery featured a wide variety of media, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, and installation pieces. The show explored a range of topics in his Appalachian Surrealism style. In describing his work, Boggs says “I’m just trying to understand the unknown.”
